About This Beer
A variation on an American Pale Ale recipe Owen first brewed in 2020 — originally a Panhead Supercharger clone from Home Brew West in Auckland. Over time the recipe has drifted considerably from that starting point: Vienna and Supernova replace Light Crystal and Toffee malts; Nectaron, Kohatu, and Strata replace Simcoe, Centennial, and Citra; BRY-97 replaces US-05.
The grain bill is simple — Gladfield Ale Malt as the base, Vienna for sweetness and body, Supernova for a touch of colour and complexity. The hop schedule runs across all four stages: Nectaron at 60 and 10 minutes, then a whirlpool at under 80°C loading up Nectaron, Kohatu, and Strata, and the same trio in a Day 4 dry hop.
Dry hopped at SG 1.012, pressure slowly increased to 6.5 psi alongside a temperature rise to 22°C. By Day 7, pressure was up to 18 psi. Cold-crashed over Days 11–14 to 6.8°C — final 12.6 psi equating to 2.4 volumes CO2. Bottled 1 September 2025, final volume 20.6 litres.
Good head retention, balanced bitterness, tropical and citrus hop character. A reliable, well-balanced APA.
