Tasting notes
Same base APA as August 2025. Replaced Kohatu and Strata with Nelson Sauvin hop oil for whirlpool and dry hop — an experiment in hop oil vs pellet delivery.
About This Beer
Same grain bill and hot-side hop schedule as Owen’s August 2025 APA — Gladfield Ale Malt, Vienna, and Supernova; Nectaron for bittering at 60 minutes and 10 minutes. The experiment is on the cool side: instead of pellet Kohatu and Strata in the whirlpool and dry hop, this batch uses Nelson Sauvin hop oil — 2 ml in the whirlpool, 2.5 ml dry-hopped on Day 5.
Hop oils are a highly concentrated extract — they carry the aromatic compounds of the hop without the vegetable matter, and add no isomerised bitterness. Using 2–2.5 ml of Nelson Sauvin oil in place of 100g+ of pellet hops is a direct comparison of delivery method on the same base recipe.
OG 1.050, FG 1.007, ABV 5.6%.
