Tasting notes

Light colour, good head retention. Hoppy, lingering finish. The four-variety dry hop (Simcoe / Cascade / Motueka / Pacific Jade) delivers the lingering hop character; no metallic note flagged unlike the later 2-packet US-05 batch 18.

About This Beer

An iteration on an earlier Panhead Supercharger clone. The notebook references “Panhead clone 3/12/20” — December 2020, an uncaptured brew from batch 8 or 9 of Owen’s earlier brewing history (the captured notebook begins around batch 10, late January 2021). This August 2021 brew is the bridge between that uncaptured December 2020 clone and the November 2021 Panhead clone (batch 18).

Same grain bill structure as batch 18 — Gladfield Ale Malt plus Briess Caramel 20L and 40L. The hop schedule is where Owen experiments: Centennial cut from 100 g to 50 g and used boil-only, leftover Motueka from a previous brew added at dry hop, and Pacific Jade introduced as a new 25 g dry hop addition.

Grain Bill

5.25 kg total — identical to the November 2021 Panhead clone:

  • 4.8 kg Gladfield Ale Malt
  • 0.3 kg Briess Caramel 20L
  • 0.15 kg Briess Caramel 40L

Hop Schedule

323 g total — 130 g boil + 193 g dry hop. Five varieties used in this batch (vs three in the cleaner batch 18):

Centennial — 50 g (reduced from planned 100 g, boil only)

  • 10 g at 30 min, 20 g at 10 min, 20 g at 5 min

Simcoe — 100 g

  • 10 g at 60 min, 40 g at 10 min, 50 g dry hop on day 7

Cascade — 100 g

  • 30 g at 5 min, 70 g dry hop on day 7

Motueka — 48 g (leftover from a previous brew)

  • 48 g dry hop on day 7

Pacific Jade — 25 g

  • 25 g dry hop on day 7

The big differences vs the later Panhead clone (batch 18): Centennial halved and used boil-only, plus the unique Motueka and Pacific Jade dry hop charges. Batch 18 returns to a cleaner three-hop schedule.

Fermentation

1 packet of Safale US-05 — single packet here vs the 2 packets used in batch 18. Both batches sit at similar OG, so the November pitch was arguably over-pitched.

Dry hop on day 7 from pitch (timing inferred). All four dry hop charges added together: 50 g Simcoe, 70 g Cascade, 48 g Motueka, 25 g Pacific Jade.

US-05 attenuated more conservatively here than in batch 18 — FG hit 1.012 vs 1.013 target for an ABV of 5.5 % vs 5.2 % target. Compare to batch 18’s 1.008 / 5.91 % with 2 packets on a near-identical recipe.

Water treatment: 1 tsp calcium sulphate, ½ tsp calcium chloride, ½ tsp magnesium sulphate — same as batch 18.

Packaging

150 g of white sugar dissolved in 250 mL of boiling water, added to the bottling vessel for conditioning. 21.75 L bottled — works out to ~6.9 g/L of priming sugar, within standard range and slightly toward the lower end which suits the style.

Tasting

  • Light colour, good head retention
  • Hoppy, lingering finish

The four-hop dry-hop charge appears to have produced the lingering hop finish noted in the tasting.

Lineage

  • Earlier (uncaptured): Panhead clone, ~3 December 2020 — batch 8 or 9, no recipe details captured
  • This brew: American APA, 13 August 2021 (batch 14)
  • Later: Panhead Supercharger Clone, 14 November 2021 (batch 18) — same grain bill, cleaner three-hop schedule, double pitch
