About

A bitterless black wheat malt — Gladfield's blackest colour malt — for adding smooth dark brown-to-black colour with very little flavour. Because it is huskless it carries no bitterness or astringency into the beer, so it can stand in for roasted barley's colour without the dark espresso bite. Its smooth, subtle character (a minor roast-coffee note) makes it suitable far beyond stouts and porters, including colour adjustment in lagers, wits and saisons.

Usage

No diastatic power; mash with a base malt. 1–2% for colour with almost no flavour; 2–6% for colour plus smooth roast-coffee and chocolate notes; 7–10% for definite colour with a velvety subtle roast. Huskless, so it adds no astringency even late in the mash.
