About This Beer
Owen’s very first brew — an Occasional Brewer 23-litre all-grain recipe pack, the “Lush East Coast IPA”, brewed in March 2020. It is where the whole logbook starts. As a hazy East Coast IPA it leans on a soft, oat-heavy base: Malteurop Ale Malt does the bulk of the work, with a generous 14% rolled oats plus wheat malt for body and a hazy, full mouthfeel, a touch of Light Crystal for depth, and barley hulls thrown in to keep the husk-free oat and wheat from clogging the sparge.
The hopping is all New Zealand and all late: a single 28 g charge of Rakau at 20 minutes, then a big 126 g whirlpool at the end of the boil — Kohatu, Rakau and Riwaka in equal measure — and a 165 g dry hop of the same three about a week after brewing. No early bittering addition; the kit lets the late and dry hops carry the bitterness and the tropical, citrus, stonefruit aroma the three hops are known for.
Brew Day
Brewed to the kit sheet: mash 23.31 litres at 66°C for 40 minutes, sparge 12.06 litres at 76°C, then a 60-minute boil with Rakau and a quarter-teaspoon of Koppafloc at 20 minutes and the big triple-hop charge at flameout, with a ten-minute whirlpool. Two packets of US-05 went in, fermented at 20°C.
The figures shown — OG 1.068, FG 1.016, 7.0% ABV, 37 IBU, 13 EBC — are the kit’s estimates at 70% brewhouse efficiency; Owen didn’t record measured gravities for this early batch.
