Gladfield German Pilsner Malt

base malt · Gladfield Malt · New Zealand

New Zealand-malted barley processed to a German Pilsner malt specification. Pale, clean, and highly fermentable — lighter and crisper than Gladfield's standard Pilsner, suited to Belgian blondes, lagers, and light ales where a very pale colour and clean malt backbone are the goal.

About

Developed from an old-world style malt: high-nitrogen, plump spring barley taken through a long traditional germination and a light kilning. Gladfield call it the 'marshmallow malt' — sweet but clean and almost without flavour — designed to lauter well, give a solid extract, and let the brewer manipulate the finished result. The higher protein retains medium-chain proteins for body and head retention, with a crisp, refreshing finish and a pale straw colour. Ideal when you want a clean, non-biscuity base, as in a Bohemian-style pilsner.
