Gladfield Big O Malted Oats
specialty malt · Gladfield Malt · New Zealand
Fully modified and kilned whole oats with a thick husk, Gladfield Big O Malted Oats contribute a rich nutty oat flavour, silky mouthfeel, and superior haze stability compared to flaked oat products. The thick husk aids sparging and run-off. Use up to 20%; increase strike water to account for husk absorption.

About
Gladfield's Big O is whole oats fully modified and kilned rather than rolled or flaked, with a large, thick husk. The kilning develops a rich, nutty oat flavour that goes beyond a flaked product, while still delivering the silky smoothness oats are prized for and a better, more stable haze in hazy IPAs. The husk is a bonus, greatly aiding sparging and run-off where husk-free oat adjuncts struggle.

Usage
Use up to ~20%. The oats and husk absorb more water, so increase strike water accordingly, and mill the oats together with the barley for an even crush. The thick husk improves run-off — a real advantage over flaked oats in high-oat grain bills.
