Tasting notes
2025-05-04
A SMaSH-style American IPA pairing Golden Promise with Krush — the same single-malt platform as Golden Weka Ale, this time with Krush as the sole hop. The format strips everything back to read what Krush actually contributes without other varieties in the way.
Grain Bill
Six kilograms of Golden Promise — the entire fermentable load. A slightly higher mash temperature at 67.5°C helped retain enough body to balance the 102 IBU hop load while still finishing dry.
Hops
All Krush, 300 g total:
- Boil: 15 g at 60 min, 30 g at 20 min, 45 g at 10 min
- Whirlpool: 60 g at 80°C, 20-minute stand
- Dry hop: 150 g at gravity trigger 1.018
Krush is a Kiwi variety with tropical stone fruit, kiwi, and mandarin character. High myrcene and thiol precursors make it especially interesting with thiol-active yeasts like Pomona.
Fermentation
LalBrew Pomona pitched at 18.5°C. Dry hop triggered at 1.018, then temperature stepped to 21°C and 22°C for clean-up. Pressure built to 16–17 psi during the rest before cooling to 4°C around day 14.
Packaging & Tasting
Mixed packaging on day 15 — keg plus bottles — carbonated to 2.4 vol CO₂. Tasted at packaging: strong aroma and flavour with good body for the single-malt format, no off-flavours. A successful read on what Krush brings to the table.
